
This unique, behind-the-scenes experience transforms familiar streets into living history, allowing participants to step inside vintage homes, heritage businesses, restored civic buildings, and sacred spaces in Ames’ Main Street and Old Town historic districts. Each location offers a new perspective on Ames’ evolution, architecture, and community life. Visit ten businesses and residences:
Start at any building to join the free self-guided tour and pick up a brochure with map. Volunteers will be stationed at each location to answer questions.
Ames History Museum is a stop on the tour and will have free admission! Thanks to Ames: A Glimpse Inside for admission sponsorship.
Behind the counter tours of the Post Office are at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.
Enjoy tasty snacks at The Recipe prepared by Chef Andy at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. (while supplies last).
