DESCRIPTION:Interdisciplinary artist Amenda Tate\, a 2023 Iowa State University integrated visual arts graduate and current PhD student in human computer interaction\, will unveil an interactive exhibition Nov. 10–13 at the ISU College of Design. \nIn “Future Forest: Digital Echoes\,” Tate invites visitors to wander through a paper-and-light ecosystem that reacts to presence — each visit changes the forest and every visitor leaves a trace. The installation\, a design research project for her PhD studies that also integrates knowledge gained through participatory practices in museum education\, will be on display beginning at noon Monday\, Nov. 10\, in the College of Design’s Gallery 181. \nRegular exhibition hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily. A closing reception will be from 5 – 7 p.m. Thurs.\, Nov. 13. \nUsing both scientific and aesthetic processes\, Tate creates work that explores movement\, our relationship to technology and the understanding of what it means to be human\, including the ways in which “humanness” can be denied. She uses custom-designed technology\, traditional mediums and social interactions to foster connection. \nTate describes “Future Forest” as part ritual\, part experiment and part myth. In the artist statement accompanying the show\, she notes that visitors will experience interwoven stories that unfold out of order: “ ‘The Waxen Grove\,’ where ancestral spirits are preserved in wax and light; ‘The Translucent Shrine\,’ where machines resurrect belief; and ‘The Resonant Core\,’ where your movement becomes memory. Experience. Interact. Leave a digital echo.” \nSupport for the project has been provided by the Iowa Arts Council\, which exists within the Iowa Economic Development Authority. Follow the project’s progression at @futureforest_dsm on Instagram. \nAbout the artist\nTate received a master of fine arts in integrated visual arts from Iowa State in 2023. While pursing her PhD in human computer interaction\, she also serves as docent and tours program manager at the Des Moines Art Center. A 2019-2020 Iowa Arts Council Fellow\, she has work featured in the “State of the Arts: Iowa’s Artist Fellows” exhibition Nov. 7–29 at Mainframe Studios in Des Moines. She has been an artist-in-residence with the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center and Ballet Des Moines\, and her work has been published in The New York Times\, the Denver Post\, the Des Moines Register\, Better Homes & Gardens and Popular Science. \nAmong Tate’s honors are two Editor’s Choice Awards at the 2018 New York International Maker Faire and a special recognition award in the 2017 International RobotArt competition. She received a 2020 project grant and a 2021 Iowa Arts & Culture Resilience Grant\, both awarded by the Iowa Arts Council in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. This detailed garden scale display was created by Applied Imagination\, an internationally recognized company whose train displays merge botanical design and architecture. The RG Express is one of only 18 North American train displays of this magnitude! Walk past\, around\, and under miniature buildings and bridges built in the likeness of some of Iowa State University’s and Reiman Gardens’ most significant buildings. Don’t miss the magic of the RG Express this holiday season!  \nClosed November 22\, Thanksgiving Day\, Christmas Eve\, Christmas Day\, and New Year’s Day. Open until 8 p.m. on Tues.\, December 2\, 9\, and 16 to allow for special nighttime viewing of the RG Express. The lighted buildings and holiday decorations help the season come alive as the trains travel throughout our indoor conservatory.  \nDue to capacity limits\, the RG Express Train Display is not open during the Winter Wonderscape light show. DESCRIPTION:Innovations in Materials and Colors\nSolo Exhibition by Susan Hensel \nExhibition Dates:\nNovember 3\, 2025 – Exhibition Opening Day\nNovember 15\, 2025 – Exhibition Closes \nCommunity Gallery Hours: \nMonday-Wednesday 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. \nThursday 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. \nFriday 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. \nSaturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. \nSunday CLOSED \nArtist Statement:\nI make sculptural textile work combining mixed-media practices with fabric and embroidery across digital and manual platforms. I exploit the physics of light as it interacts with the structure of the triangular embroidery thread.\nThe Innovation: I work in digital embroidery which is commonly used for monograms\, ball caps\, sports patches\, and holiday sweaters! Quite by accident\, with no prior exposure\, I saw a computer aided embroidery machine in action at the Minnesota State Fair. I was astounded by the COLOR\, it’s depth and mutability. At that moment I could almost see how it could be manipulated in the sculptural realm. It took years of study\, research\, experimentation\, grants\, loans\, and serendipity to arrive at this place of utter innovation: making hard-edged\, three-dimensional structures from paradoxically soft materials that hold their shape\, yet provide perplexing\, observed color shifts activated by the viewer’s movement. No motors\, no smoke and mirrors. Just the movement of the viewer. The effect on the viewer is one of confusion and sometimes awe\, stopping them in their tracks as they try to parse what it is they are seeing. The color environment that I create is based on several material considerations. The polyester embroidery thread is trilobal\, having a roughly triangular cross section\, causing light to scatter at different angles from the thread\, displaying a broader chroma. By creating permanent folds and wrinkles\, the scatter is intensified. What this means is that with very few actual colors of thread\, a changing\, rich chroma can be created. A shape that has identical threads\, when it is folded\, can appear to have a different colorway on either side of the fold. This perception is expanded when a person looks at the piece from different angles\, or when they are in motion. The closest analog would be the old billboards made from vertical boards: drive by them in one direction and see “Marilyn Monroe” drive in the other direction and see “Rock Hudson.” At its base\, this is a simple application of the most basic understanding of the physics of color. I am manipulating materials in a way that changes the angle of reflection of the light that forms the visible colors. \nThe social environment: The pressure to produce\, to stay busy\, to work overtime (regardless of financial need) is pervasive in western culture. Having an overfull calendar\, being frantically busy are stressful badges of honor that can reduce productivity\, health and life satisfaction. It has been my goal\, through over 50 years of work and through many media to create artwork that encourages people to take a breath\, slow down\, be present in the moment and be aware of the opportunities for both community and introspection\, whether that be in the home or work environment. By producing these radically beautiful and visually perplexing works\, I can encourage people to slow down\, even for 30 seconds\, and return to their tasks refreshed. It is a sly subterfuge\, activated below knowledge and below language…a pure\, refreshing experience. \n  \nArtist Biography:\nSusan Hensel makes sculptural textile work combining mixed-media practices with fabric and embroidery across digital and manual platforms exploiting the physics of light as it interacts with the structure of the triangular embroidery thread.

DESCRIPTION:Sun.\, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. and Mon.\, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.\nCasting 3 men and 2 women \nCast of Characters:\nRuthie:  The matriarch of the family.  She starts the play in her late 40s or early 50s and ages 30 years as does everyone.  She’s bossy\, authoritative\, means well\, but tries to steer the world more than is humanly possible.  She needles each of her children and even her husband\, Bill\, to an extent\, but at the bottom\, way down there\, truly loves them all. \nBill: The patriarch.  He loves everyone and is a go-with-the-flow sort.  Easygoing\, wouldn’t hurt anyone’s feelings\, desperately in love with his kids and wife.  Being the dad of these people and Ruthie’s husband is his life’s work and he’s successful at it.  He lives a little in fear of Ruthie\, but the worm turns when it must. \nRichard:  The eldest son.  Mid-to-late 20s as we start.  He wants to conquer the world and is always looking for ways to do that.  Not a plugger\, more of an entrepreneur.   He buys the latest everything and dresses “up to the second” stylish.  He’s a good guy but has perhaps seen too many movies of how men behave rather than behaving as he would.  A one-time football hero\, he misses that kind of spotlight. \nMaddie:  Second Child.  Mid-20s at the top.  She’s an aspiring actress.  A strong-willed person who loves her family.  She’s closest to Thomas\, and the two of them have a long-standing habit of picking on their big brother as a team.  It’s good-natured except when it’s not.  Of all the kids\, she’s the only one to have moved away from her hometown.  She lives in New York and struggles with the artist’s life as well as her life-life.  She and her mother have a difficult relationship. \nThomas:  Son two.  The baby of the family and the “good” son.  A nice\, even-tempered guy\, in the style of his father\, who thought his life was on a plan.  A devoutly religious man studying for the priesthood at the beginning\, he’s nonetheless funny\, warm\, and not at all rigid in his approach to life. He means very well\, but like everyone has his life turn out differently than he planned.
