SUMMARY:The Altons & Thee Sinseers - ISU Student Union Board\, M-Shop
DESCRIPTION:The Altons & Thee Sinseers: Club Heartache Tour\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m. | Show starts @ 8 p.m.\nTICKETS: $20 ($15 w/ ISU Student ID) in advance | $2 increase day-of-show \nGenre: R&B / soul rock\nFor fans of: Thee Sacred Souls\, The Delfonics\, Jalen Ngonda\, The Supremes \nTHE ALTONS\nEmerging from Southeast Los Angeles\, The Altons have become a fixture in the burgeoning West Coast souldies scene. Helping launch the Daptone Records imprint Penrose as one of the five premier groups on the label\, The Altons blossomed from selling out local nightclubs to performing on the grand stages of Austin City Limits and the Corona Capital festival in Mexico\, selling thousands of 45s in the process. \nThe heart of The Altons’ alluring sound is the distinctive and oft romantic vocal harmony of Adriana Flores and Bryan Ponce. Their voices intertwine effortlessly\, bringing a level of intimacy and sincerity to the music that groups can seldom achieve. Ponce’s virtuosic guitar playing is anchored by the formidable rhythm section of Caitlin Moss on drums and Chris “Bolillo” Manjarrez on bass\, creating a captivatingly organic synergy. Together\, the evolution of their sound can best be heard via the soulful\, sing-along hit singles: “Over and Over” [borrowed as the viral song “Otra Vez” by ProdMarvin\, which took over TikTok and Instagram in 2023\,] and “When You Go (That’s When You’ll Know)” [sampled by Mary J. Blige on her Grammy-nominated album Good Morning Gorgeous.] \nTheir debut album on Daptone Records\, Heartache in Room 14\, marks a significant evolution in their journey\, having collaborated with renowned Daptone Records producer Bosco Mann. The highly anticipated album dropped in February of 2025 and\, along with the extensive worldwide touring they been doing since\, Heartache in Room 14 is undoubtedly taking The Altons distinctive brand of soul music to lofty new heights. \nTHEE SINSEERS\nStraight out of East L.A. and led by multi-instrumentalist\, producer\, and singer-songwriter Joseph Quiñones\, Thee Sinseers feature a full brass section led by Eric Johnson (Tenor sax)\, Steve Surman (Bari sax)\, and Joseluis Jimenez (trombone). The line up also includes sweet harmonies and a tight rhythm section consisting of Christopher Manjarrez (Bass)\, Francisco Flores (Guitar)\, Bryan Ponce (Guitar/vox)\, Luis Carpio (Drums/vox)\, and Adriana Flores (Vox). Together they are a part of a community of musicians who are tying together the nostalgic and the classic with the innovative and the new to bring a unique sound to soul music. \nThee Sinseers are part of the Colemine Records family led by Terry Cole\, who released their first singles\, “It Was Only A Dream” and “I Don’t Mind” in 2019\, with a full length LP\, Sinseerly Yours releasing in March 2024. The band’s song “Seems Like” was also included in the inaugural compilation\, Presenting Penrose Records from the Penrose imprint of the renowned\, Brooklyn-based label\, Daptone Records. The song “It Was Only A Dream” was featured in the feature film Self Reliance starring Jake Johnson\, and in the TV show\, Riverdale. \nTo date\, Thee Sinseers have dazzled audiences across the country in soul strongholds such as California\, Texas\, New York\, Chicago\, Oregon\, and more. The road is paved in love and soul and Thee Sinseers are on their way to a venue near you soon. \nTHE MCCHARMLYS\nSanta Ana\, CA-based doo-wop / surf rock band The McCharmlys will support the show. Blending vintage vibes with modern edge\, The McCharmlys have won over punk\, new wave\, and rockabilly crowds alike across the nation. \nTICKETING NOTES: All sales are final | A 3% processing fee is applied to online purchases | All tickets are subject to a non-refundable $2 MidwesTIX service fee | Ticket prices increase $2 day-of-show | Each and every ISU student ticket will require a valid\, unique ISU student ID at the door to avoid an upcharge to the public price. \n— Proof of age required for alcohol purchases —\n    (selection of beer/wine/hard-seltzers available)

SUMMARY:MinionFest w/ Hot Kunch\, Display Case\, & Formerly Gifted – ISU Student Union Board\, M-Shop
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 7:30 p.m. | Show starts @  8 p.m.\nTICKETS: $7 ($5 w/ ISU Student ID) in advance | $2 increase day-of-show \nGenre: alt rock\nFor fans of: Foo Fighters\, Sweet Pill\, Sonic Youth\, Minions \nHot Kunch was formed at Iowa State University in 2016 via the now defunct ISU music-making club\, GENRE\, which helped musicians meet each other based on what sound and genres they were pursuing. What would become Hot Kunch all auditioned to be part of “The Bar Band” and ended up getting a weekly gig at Paddy’s Pub on Welch Ave. They quickly learned around 100 cover songs for their “Live Band Karaoke”sets and after a semester of drunk college kids asking if they could hold the band’s instruments they decided to start pursuing their own music. \nWhile going to school the band lost and replaced lead vocals\, drums\, and violin but still kept going. In 2021 they recorded 5 of their best songs with Luke Tweedy at Flat Black Studios near Iowa City. Hot Kunch truly took off at that point and have been playing multiple shows every month around the Midwest. While the band plays anywhere they get a gig\, their strongest audiences continue to be at home in Des Moines and Ames where they’re revered for their stage energy and antics. \nDes Moines hard-rock favorites Display Case will support the show and Ames’ own and alt-rockers\, Formerly Gifted\, will open.

SUMMARY:“Innovations in Materials and Colors” - Solo Art Exhibition Susan Hensel - Octagon Center for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Innovations in Materials and Colors\nSolo Exhibition by Susan Hensel \nExhibition Dates:\nNovember 3rd\, 2025 – Exhibition Opening Day\nNovember 15th\, 2025 – Exhibition Closes \nCommunity Gallery Hours: \nMonday-Wednesday 10:00 am – 5:30 pm \nThursday 10:00 am – 7:00 pm \nFriday 10:00 am – 5:30 pm \nSaturday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm \nSunday CLOSED \nArtist Statement:\nI make sculptural textile work combining mixed-media practices with fabric and embroidery across digital and manual platforms. I exploit the physics of light as it interacts with the structure of the triangular embroidery thread.\nThe Innovation: I work in digital embroidery which is commonly used for monograms\, ball caps\, sports patches\, and holiday sweaters! Quite by accident\, with no prior exposure\, I saw a computer aided embroidery machine in action at the Minnesota State Fair. I was astounded by the COLOR\, it’s depth and mutability. At that moment I could almost see how it could be manipulated in the sculptural realm. It took years of study\, research\, experimentation\, grants\, loans\, and serendipity to arrive at this place of utter innovation: making hard-edged\, three-dimensional structures from paradoxically soft materials that hold their shape\, yet provide perplexing\, observed color shifts activated by the viewer’s movement. No motors\, no smoke and mirrors. Just the movement of the viewer. The effect on the viewer is one of confusion and sometimes awe\, stopping them in their tracks as they try to parse what it is they are seeing. The color environment that I create is based on several material considerations. The polyester embroidery thread is trilobal\, having a roughly triangular cross section\, causing light to scatter at different angles from the thread\, displaying a broader chroma. By creating permanent folds and wrinkles\, the scatter is intensified. What this means is that with very few actual colors of thread\, a changing\, rich chroma can be created. A shape that has identical threads\, when it is folded\, can appear to have a different colorway on either side of the fold. This perception is expanded when a person looks at the piece from different angles\, or when they are in motion. The closest analog would be the old billboards made from vertical boards: drive by them in one direction and see “Marilyn Monroe” drive in the other direction and see “Rock Hudson.” At its base\, this is a simple application of the most basic understanding of the physics of color. I am manipulating materials in a way that changes the angle of reflection of the light that forms the visible colors. \nThe social environment: The pressure to produce\, to stay busy\, to work overtime (regardless of financial need) is pervasive in western culture. Having an overfull calendar\, being frantically busy are stressful badges of honor that can reduce productivity\, health and life satisfaction. It has been my goal\, through over 50 years of work and through many media to create artwork that encourages people to take a breath\, slow down\, be present in the moment and be aware of the opportunities for both community and introspection\, whether that be in the home or work environment. By producing these radically beautiful and visually perplexing works\, I can encourage people to slow down\, even for 30 seconds\, and return to their tasks refreshed. It is a sly subterfuge\, activated below knowledge and below language…a pure\, refreshing experience. \n  \nArtist Biography:\nSusan Hensel makes sculptural textile work combining mixed-media practices with fabric and embroidery across digital and manual platforms exploiting the physics of light as it interacts with the structure of the triangular embroidery thread.
