SUMMARY:The Bird Hunters - The Goldfinch Room
DESCRIPTION:Stephens Auditorium and Reiman Gardens are hosting The Goldfinch Room Songwriter Showcase at Reiman Gardens. This partnership brings together singers/songwriters from the Midwest in the Goldfinch Room tradition of storytelling with the stunning beauty of Reiman Gardens. Performances will take place in the Reiman Gardens’ Catalpa Courtyard. Season passes will be available as well as tickets to can be found here: https://www.center.iastate.edu/gfr-reiman-gardens/. Reiman Gardens members will receive free admission to the performances. \nThe Bird Hunters: Taking their name from a Turnpike Troubadours song\, the band draws a lot of influence from bands like Turnpike\, who weave heartfelt lyrics and deeper-meaning songwriting into foot-stomping\, rowdy country music for the party crowd. The Bird Hunters are unwilling to trade shallow lyrics for a good time and true honest songwriting is always at the center of the music they make. The Bird Hunters claim the genre “Midwest Country” drawing influence from the radio they grew up listening to and the stories they’ve been told their whole lives. Iowa is known for its non-regional diction so you won’t find any fake accents\, but the twang is well represented in their telecasters and the rhythms are made for two-stepping. \nAt each Songwriter Showcase\, a local food truck will be on site and beverages will be available for purchase. Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are allowed into the Gardens. Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets as the seating is on the lawn. If weather proves to be a challenge\, the performance will move inside to the Garden Room. \nReiman Garden members receive free admission to all the Songwriter Showcases. For non-members\, Stephens Auditorium is offering season passes at $50 and Individual show tickets at $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Passes and tickets do include free admission to Reiman Gardens on the afternoon of the performance. The Goldfinch Room Songwriter Showcase at Reiman Gardens is supported by Ames Community Arts Council\, Discover Ames Community Grant Award with additional underwriting support from Doug and Gwenna Jacobson and David and Bonnie Orth.

DESCRIPTION:Annual Lecture Series\nAmes Oddities: A Pictorial Tour\nAttend in person: Ames Public Library\, 515 Douglas Ave.\nAttend online: Register for the Zoom link\nFree and open to the public\nSpeaker: Kathy Svec\, museum volunteer\, with help from Sharon Wirth\, Bob Bourne\, and Alex Fejfar \nAll around Ames are certain structures and features that are odd-looking\, have a strange shape\, or don’t seem to fit into the rest of their surroundings. Some are remnants of past landscape features\, some were influenced by historic decisions that are hardly remembered in the current day. SUMMARY:Raynes - The Goldfinch Room
DESCRIPTION:British-American trio Raynes have wasted no time making themselves heard. Signing with Sony Music Publishing less than a year after their inception\, the group has since released six singles and two EPs and have performed across the US and the UK. Their singular blend of pop\, folk\, and world music is being featured on television shows\, commercials\, and tastemakers’ playlists\, earning them hundreds of thousands of monthly listeners and millions of streams. \nMat Charley and Joe Berger\, both born and raised in North Dakota\, met in college\, where Mat––the band’s producer and multi-instrumentalist––was usually skipping class to write songs. Knowing that they would need a strong vocalist\, they took to the internet to find the missing piece of their project. After months of searching\, they came across a video of Mark Race\, a native of Durham\, UK. Ten days later\, after a Facebook message and a few phone calls\, Mark was on a flight to LA to meet Mat and Joe. Abstractly tied to childhood memories and the significance of motherhood\, Deutmeyer’s work reflects lived experiences as places of joy\, sorrow\, contemplation and peace.\n  \nRaised in eastern Iowa\, Deutmeyer graduated with a B.A. in Graphic Design from Ashford University and an M.F.A. in Integrated Visual Arts from Iowa State University. Her artwork has been regionally and nationally exhibited with a recent solo exhibition of Everything Fades at the Dubuque Museum of Art in Dubuque\, Iowa.

DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, May 10\, 2025 | 7:30 p.m.\nMartha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall (300 Union Dr.)\, ISU \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKevin Zhu’s astonishing technical mastery and artistic sensibility have earned him major honors and accolades worldwide. The youngest recipient of the Yehudi Menuhin Competition in 2012\, he went on to win the Paganini International Competition six years later\, at 17. Recent concert tours have taken him to major stages of Berlin and  Beijing\, New York and Washington\, DC. His mentors at the Juilliard School were Itzhak Perlman and Li Lin. \nPraised for his “awesome technical command and maturity” (The Strad) and “absolute virtuosity\, almost blinding in its incredible purity” (L’ape musicale)\, Kevin has performed on the world’s largest stages. \nPianist Maxim Lando has been hailed by the New York Times for his “brilliance and infectious exuberance. ”  In 2017\, at age 15\, he performed on Carnegie Hall’s opening night gala with Chick Corea\, Lang Lang and the Philadelphia Orchestra.  And upon winning First Prize at the Young Concert Artists International Auditions the next year\, his recital debuts at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall and the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater included Liszt’s complete Transcendental Etudes.  He was named a  Gilmore Young Artist\, as well as Musical America‘s New Artist of the Month and received the 2022 Vendome Grand Prize as well as First Prize in the Franz Liszt International Competition.

DESCRIPTION:To mark World Collage Day\, a hands-on collage event will be offered Sat.\, May 10\, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ames Public Library in the Farwell T. Brown Auditorium\, 515 Douglas Ave.\, Ames\, IA. \nThis event\, suitable for ages 14 and up\, is free but advanced registration is required to ensure your spot. Visit the APL calendar or call the adult services desk at 515-239-5646\, ext. 4 to register. \nCollage is the artistic technique of creating a composition by cutting and pasting together various unrelated paper images and materials into a new whole. \nThe day will begin with a short presentation from local artists about the various styles of collage. Attendees can then use a wide array of provided materials to create their own artwork to bring home. The artists\, Bob Anders\, Deb Anders-Bond\, Kathy Svec\, and Susan Norris\, will be available to offer advice and assistance. No experience necessary for what will be a leisurely day of crafting\, creating\, and experimenting. \nParticipants should bring a sack lunch and a pair of good scissors.
