Based on her book\, “Feed Sacks: The Colourful History of a Frugal Fabric\,” Linzee Kull McCray will share both the beauty of feed sacks and their importance in the social and economic history of the times in which they were made and used. The lecture features historic photos\, vintage advertising\, and fabric patterns\, as well as actual sacks and the clothing\, quilts\, and other items made from them. It is of interest to lovers of fashion\, textiles and design\, historians\, quilters\, and those with an interest in sustainability. \nPresented in partnership by Ames History Museum\, Ames Public Library\, The Knittery Nook & Fibre Co.\, Prairie Rose Needleworks\, and Quilting Connection. DESCRIPTION:Puppet Making\, K – 6th Grades\n\n\nPuppet Making (Grades K–6)\nWed.\, 4 – 5:30 pm\nOctober 1 – 8 (2 weeks)\n$45 \nStudents will explore puppetry as both an art form and a powerful tool for storytelling and self-expression. Using a wide variety of materials\, children will build sturdy\, multi-dimensional hand puppets from the inside out. We’ll begin by creating an armature\, then sculpt and design facial features\, followed by sewing costumes and painting. Each puppet will come to life through personal touches such as hair\, jewels\, crowns\, and other imaginative embellishments. Students are encouraged to bring special treasures from home to incorporate into their creations. New skills will be practiced\, while the “process of making” will be the fundamental goal for the child. Materials like paint\, charcoal\, fabric\, plastic\, sculpture media\, glue\, cardboard\, paper\, etc. will be used. The use of scissors and proper handling of materials and color mixing will also be explored. Guardians are encouraged to participate in class activities. \n*Children who are 5 years old may be more developmentally willing/able to work alone on their projects. We look beyond ideologies\, divisive words\, materials and techniques. We live in a time when it is more critical than ever to come together as a country\, community\, and region and find commonalities. How does the ephemeral nature of paper speak to a paused sunset? How can abstraction bring us together in an age of dialogue and representation? Our focus returns full circle to look at our core values to share our interior person experiences and the kinship of the Cedar River Artisans with the greater Iowa community. \n  \nArtists’ Biographies:\nCedar River Artisans (CRA) is a consortium of professional artists seeking public and private art commissions for collaborative or individual artwork. We are based in Cedar Rapids\, Iowa. Our artists live in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding regions. Individually\, the members have a history of success in juried art shows throughout the area and are represented in several leading galleries and museums. As a collective we are interconnected. The Cedar River Artisans work in a broad swatch of materials: printmaking\, sculpture\, ceramics\, pastel\, oil painting\, fiber arts and photography. Our working method is collaborative\, and our objective is to produce a unified visual statement through our art and to bring the power of art into your public or commercial spaces. \nThe collective consists of eight members: Robert Fox\, M.L Kline\, Ellen Kleckner\, Julia Kottal\, Nancy Lindsay\, Marty Mitchell\, Elizabeth Rhoads Read and John Schwartzkopf.

Using a wide variety of materials\, children will build sturdy\, multi-dimensional hand puppets from the inside out. We’ll begin by creating an armature\, then sculpt and design facial features\, followed by sewing costumes and painting. Each puppet will come to life through personal touches such as hair\, jewels\, crowns\, and other imaginative embellishments. Students are encouraged to bring special treasures from home to incorporate into their creations. DESCRIPTION:The Octagon Center for the Arts is proud to present the 54th Annual Octagon Art Festival. There will be plenty for art enthusiasts of all ages to experience in downtown Ames on Sun\,\, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. 92 artists from all over the Midwest will fill Main Street in downtown Ames with artistic creations. \nThe Octagon Center for the Arts is passionate about supporting artists. One of our goals is to provide space and opportunities for artists at all stages of their careers\, including a focus on emerging artists. Four of the participants are Emerging Artists who are up and coming local creatives. \nA wide variety of functional\, wearable and decorative artwork will be available within any budget. Come experience the many wonders of art at the Octagon Art Festival and support artisans with your purchase of functional and beautiful art. The festival is the perfect place to get an early start on shopping for holiday gifts. Kid friendly activities will include face painting\, Becca the Balloon Lady\, chalk art area\, and a kids craft area located in front of the Octagon Center for the Arts with about 10 art projects for children to create and take home.
