Two-Sided Embroidery Workshop – Creative Artists’ Studios of Ames (CASA)

Two-sided embroidery – how to sew it, how to design it
Embroidery that looks the same on both sides of the fabric is desirable for a shawl, a cuff, a napkin, a handkerchief, or an ornament. A stitch that produces identical designs on both sides is a Holbein stitch (because Hans Holbein painted people with embroidered cuffs) or Kasuti embroidery (from a tradition in India). It is often used in blackwork.
In the workshop, CASA will look at simple designs, analyze more complex ones to figure out how to stitch them so they will be the same on both sides, and then discuss how to design patterns that can be stitched to be identical on the front and the back. CASA will discuss ways to transfer a pattern and explore ways to fasten the thread so that the ends are not obvious. Materials will be provided to work a sample piece (or two), and you will go home with patterns to try on your own.
