Kroeschell talks about the achievement of Ames natives beyond the exploits of Fred Hoiberg and Harrison Barnes. This includes pioneering women’s competitors from Karen Koellner to Erica Lynn-Douglas who put Ames on the map in high school and collegiate competition.

Culver and John Hyde\, actor Tom Milligan portrays Henry A. Wallace\, the agricultural innovator and founder of Pioneer Hi-Bred seed corn company who became US Secretary of Agriculture and later Vice President under Franklin Roosevelt. Admired by many and later branded as a Socialist during his controversial 1948 campaign for the presidency\, Wallace always held out a vision for the future. \nProgram funded by Humanities Iowa\, a private\, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the State Historical Society of Iowa.

DESCRIPTION:Just Before the Battle Mother – A Visit from a Civil War Solider \nTues.\, Mar. 24\, 7 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAttend in person: Ames Public Library\, 515 Douglas Ave. \nAttend virtually: Register for the Zoom link \nSpeaker: O.J. Fargo\, historian\, writer\, Civil War re-enactor \nDressed in full Union Army regalia\, O.J. Fargo focuses his first person presentation on an individual Iowa soldier’s Civil War experience. After a brief overview of the state’s involvement\, the audience is introduced to a returning Civil War veteran (played by Fargo). He will detail the experiences of an Iowan during the conflict. During and after the presentation\, the audience is encouraged to ask questions and engage in a dialogue with the “soldier\,” who stays in character. The speaker will bring an artifact display and full electronic Civil War roster of all men who served in and from Iowa\, searchable by name\, city\, county and/or birthplace. \nProgram funded by Humanities Iowa\, a private\, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the State Historical Society of Iowa.

DESCRIPTION:The Ames Connection to WWII’s Manhattan Project \nWed.\, Feb. 25\, 7 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAttend in person: Ames Public Library\, 515 Douglas Ave. \nAttend virtually: Register for the Zoom link \nSpeaker: Kathy Svec\, daughter of a Project researcher \nThe desperate\, top-secret race during World War II to master the military technology of nuclear fission before Nazi Germany played out in 32 sites across the U.S. and Canada. The story of how Ames became one of these sites will be told by the speaker\, whose father\, Harry J. Svec\, was pulled into the research while a graduate student in Chemistry at Iowa State.  The role that small group of scientists at a Midwest college played was critical to the timing and success of the Project.

Advance reservations required. \nThis History Happy Hour reservation is for 6:30 – 8 p.m. Doors open at 6:20 p.m. – check in at the welcome desk (be ready to show your valid ID). The history talk will begin at 6:45 p.m.\, with time after to view the gallery and explore the museum. \nHistory Talk – “Witchcraft and Skepticism: Salem and Beyond” Speaker: Dr. Michael D. Bailey\, Professor of History and Distinguished Professor in Liberal Arts and Sciences\, Iowa State University: Dr. Bailey will discuss the famous witch hunt in Salem\, Massachusetts\, in 1692\, the largest witch hunt ever to take place in North America. This will be compared to a much more restrained\, and in many ways more typical\, witch hunt that also took place in New England in 1692. Learn how\, even in a society that believed in witchcraft\, and which was capable of conducting terrible witch hunts\, there could also be considerable restraint and skepticism. Dr. Bailey is a historian of the European Middle Ages\, whose research focuses on late medieval religious history\, particularly the history of magic\, witchcraft\, and superstition\, as well as heresy and religious reform. \nEach attendee will receive two drink tickets. DESCRIPTION:The Story of Feed Sacks\nAttend in person: Ames Public Library\, 515 Douglas Ave.\nAttend online: Register for the Zoom link\nFree & open to the public\nLong before “sustainability” was a household word\, people reused the fabric bags that once held everything from animal feed and seed to sugar and flour to ballots\, hams\, and even laxatives. Based on her book\, “Feed Sacks: The Colourful History of a Frugal Fabric\,” Linzee Kull McCray will share both the beauty of feed sacks and their importance in the social and economic history of the times in which they were made and used. The lecture features historic photos\, vintage advertising\, and fabric patterns\, as well as actual sacks and the clothing\, quilts\, and other items made from them. It is of interest to lovers of fashion\, textiles and design\, historians\, quilters\, and those with an interest in sustainability. \nPresented in partnership by Ames History Museum\, Ames Public Library\, The Knittery Nook & Fibre Co.\, Prairie Rose Needleworks\, and Quilting Connection.
