DESCRIPTION:Ned McGowan (1970) is a American-Dutch composer\, flutist\, researcher and teacher\, living in Amsterdam\, the Netherlands. Known for rhythmical vitality and technical virtuosity\, his music has won awards and been performed at Carnegie Hall\, Concertgebouw and Purcell Room and other halls and festivals around the world by many orchestras\, ensembles and soloists. As a flutist he plays classical\, contemporary and improvisation concerts internationally and he has a special love for the contrabass flute. \nHis works include Concerto for iPad & Orchestra (2012) which has been performed in the Netherlands\, the United States and Brazil\, Workshop (2004) for recorder and tape\, six pièces mécaniques (2012)\, written for Calefax & Eric Vloemans\, Cleveland Times (2016)\, commissioned for the NFA Flute Convention\, Bantammer Swing (2008)\, a concerto for contrabass flute and orchestra\, which premiered in Carnegie Hall by the American Composers Orchestra\, Garden of Iniquitous Creatures (2016)\, for the Grammy Award winning sextet Eighth Blackbird\, and the recent Concerto for Indian Percussion\, for BC Manjunath. \nNed teaches composition\, Advanced Rhythm and Pulse\, and is Head of Artistic Research at the Utrecht Conservatory. He is currently finishing a PhD at the Leiden University and the DocARTES program in Ghent. He holds degrees in composition from the Royal Conservatory The Hague and in flute from the Cleveland Institute of Music and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In 2014\, he was awarded the Alumni Achievement Award from the Cleveland Institute of Music. He is the founder and director of the International Rhythm Course\, a series of course in Utrecht and India dedicated to learning\, exploring and performing rhythm.

DESCRIPTION:Experience the world premiere of “Concerto for Wind Ensemble\,” a new composition by Iowa State’s director of bands\, Dr. Michael Golemo. Commissioned by University Museums in honor of Beverly and Warren Madden\, the dynamic concerto is inspired by nationally recognized artist Beth Lipman’s creative outputs—including the newest sculpture in the Art on Campus Collection\, Hive Mind. A sonically colorful performance by the ISU Wind Ensemble will feature unique instrumentation and visual delights. Audience members will have the opportunity to experience how physical matter is expressed through music\, in three movements. \nBeth Lipman is a special guest for this free performance. The concert marks the final evening of her exhibition Beth Lipman: Middle of the Story at the Christian Petersen Art Museum. The exhibition may be viewed before the performance begins\, with museum hours of 6 – 7:30 pm that evening.

DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with pianist Jodi Goble\, this recital features songs from Molly Fillmore’s soon-to-be-released Regency-era English song album on the PARMA record label (which also features ISU’s Shelby van Nordstrand). The recital includes opera arias and additional art songs. Ms. Fillmore will be joined by Shelby VanNordstrand\, soprano\, and Samantha Schmitz\, mezzo-soprano\, for select numbers. \nMolly Fillmore is Professor of Voice and Chair of the Division of Vocal Studies at the University of North Texas College of Music. Career highlights include singing Helmwige in Der Ring Der Nibelungen\, a principal role in Satyagraha by Phillip Glass\, all at The Metropolitan Opera\, and Salome at the San Francisco Opera. Fillmore has enjoyed an international career in both mezzo-soprano and dramatic soprano repertoire\, including five seasons as the principal soloist in the ensemble of Oper Der Stadt Köln. You can hear her on numerous recordings\, including “Bold Beauty – Songs of Juliana Hall” and Die Walküre (The Metropolitan Opera). \nThis concert will have a livestream.

Other orchestral engagements include Arizona Musicfest\, Castleton Festival Orchestra\, and as a regular substitute with The Phoenix Symphony\, Tucson Symphony Orchestra\, and the Des Moines Symphony. As a chamber musician\, he has collaborated with members of The Cleveland Orchestra\, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra\, the St. Lawrence String Quartet\, the Shanghai Quartet\, the Brentano String Quartet\, and The Ying Quartet. Other highlights include performing the Elgar Cello Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations as the winner of ISU’s Concert of Soloists competition. \nDr. Park served as the cello faculty at Glendale Community College. He received his Doctorate in Cello Performance at Arizona State University\, where he served as teaching assistant to Tom Landschoot and wrote his dissertation on the efficacy of Skype lessons through quantitative analysis. He received his MM in Cello Performance at Arizona State University and was the recipient of the Atsumi Cello Scholarship. He received his BM magna cum laude at Iowa State University\, where he studied with George Work of the Ames Piano Quartet. Previous teachers include Dr. Julie McGinnis Sturm\, Hans Jørgen Jensen\, Stephen Geber\, and Yehuda Hanani. \nThis concert will have a livestream.
