SUMMARY:Twelfth Night\, early music ensemble - Ames Town and Gown Chamber Music Association
DESCRIPTION:Twelfth Night was founded in New York City in 2021 by acclaimed early music performers Baroque violinist Rachell Ellen Wong and harpsichordist David Belkovski. \nFor this performance\, they will be joined by Kevin Payne on theorbo. Lutenist Kevin Payne is active as a recitalist\, accompanist\, and continuo player. Recent ensemble work includes performances with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra\, Seattle Symphony\, Twelfth Night\, Blue Heron\, Handel and Haydn Society\, and Bach Collegium San Diego. Festival appearances include Caramoor\, Tanglewood\, Spoleto\, and Newport Classical. Performance venues include Carnegie Hall\, Alice Tully Hall\, the Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C.\, the National Concert Hall in Taipei\, Taiwan\, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam\, and the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden\, Germany. DESCRIPTION:Ned McGowan (1970) is a American-Dutch composer\, flutist\, researcher and teacher\, living in Amsterdam\, the Netherlands. Known for rhythmical vitality and technical virtuosity\, his music has won awards and been performed at Carnegie Hall\, Concertgebouw and Purcell Room and other halls and festivals around the world by many orchestras\, ensembles and soloists. As a flutist he plays classical\, contemporary and improvisation concerts internationally and he has a special love for the contrabass flute. \nHis works include Concerto for iPad & Orchestra (2012) which has been performed in the Netherlands\, the United States and Brazil\, Workshop (2004) for recorder and tape\, six pièces mécaniques (2012)\, written for Calefax & Eric Vloemans\, Cleveland Times (2016)\, commissioned for the NFA Flute Convention\, Bantammer Swing (2008)\, a concerto for contrabass flute and orchestra\, which premiered in Carnegie Hall by the American Composers Orchestra\, Garden of Iniquitous Creatures (2016)\, for the Grammy Award winning sextet Eighth Blackbird\, and the recent Concerto for Indian Percussion\, for BC Manjunath. \nNed teaches composition\, Advanced Rhythm and Pulse\, and is Head of Artistic Research at the Utrecht Conservatory. He is currently finishing a PhD at the Leiden University and the DocARTES program in Ghent. He holds degrees in composition from the Royal Conservatory The Hague and in flute from the Cleveland Institute of Music and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In 2014\, he was awarded the Alumni Achievement Award from the Cleveland Institute of Music. He is the founder and director of the International Rhythm Course\, a series of course in Utrecht and India dedicated to learning\, exploring and performing rhythm.

SUMMARY:ISU Wind Ensemble and Museums - Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall
DESCRIPTION:Experience the world premiere of “Concerto for Wind Ensemble\,” a new composition by Iowa State’s director of bands\, Dr. Michael Golemo. Commissioned by University Museums in honor of Beverly and Warren Madden\, the dynamic concerto is inspired by nationally recognized artist Beth Lipman’s creative outputs—including the newest sculpture in the Art on Campus Collection\, Hive Mind. A sonically colorful performance by the ISU Wind Ensemble will feature unique instrumentation and visual delights. Audience members will have the opportunity to experience how physical matter is expressed through music\, in three movements. \nBeth Lipman is a special guest for this free performance. The concert marks the final evening of her exhibition Beth Lipman: Middle of the Story at the Christian Petersen Art Museum. The exhibition may be viewed before the performance begins\, with museum hours of 6 – 7:30 pm that evening.

DESCRIPTION:The Ames Town & Gown Chamber Music Association will present the third concert of its 2025-26 season on Sat.\, Nov. 15\, featuring the Grammy-nominated duo\, soprano LAURA STRICKLING and pianist DANIEL SCHLOSBERG. The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall on the Iowa State University campus. As advocates for art song (the musical partnership of singer and piano)\, Laura Strickling and pianist and composer Daniel Schlosberg earned a Grammy nomination for their acclaimed album 40@40. In honor of Strickling’s 40th birthday\, the project commissioned forty new songs from forty composers. \nTogether\, Strickling and Schlosberg create a dynamic partnership that blends classical tradition with modern expression\, offering audiences an exciting program that celebrates the diversity of today’s art song. Their concert will offer a survey of European and American masters of art song\, both old and new\, including the world premiere of “The Crystal Gazer” by American composer Nyandeng Juang\, setting the poetry of Sara Teasdale. \nPraised for her “exquisite sensitivity” (Gramophone)\, Laura Strickling has become one of today’s most compelling interpreters of art song in both classical and contemporary repertoire. In addition to the recent success of the album\, Laura Strickling has enjoyed performances with major orchestras across the United States and abroad. Ms. Fillmore will be joined by Shelby VanNordstrand\, soprano\, and Samantha Schmitz\, mezzo-soprano\, for select numbers. \nMolly Fillmore is Professor of Voice and Chair of the Division of Vocal Studies at the University of North Texas College of Music. Career highlights include singing Helmwige in Der Ring Der Nibelungen\, a principal role in Satyagraha by Phillip Glass\, all at The Metropolitan Opera\, and Salome at the San Francisco Opera. Fillmore has enjoyed an international career in both mezzo-soprano and dramatic soprano repertoire\, including five seasons as the principal soloist in the ensemble of Oper Der Stadt Köln. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Yeil Park (pronounced ‘Yale’) is a dynamic cellist who enjoys his career as a soloist\, chamber musician\, orchestral musician\, and educator in Arizona. He has served as Acting Principal Cellist of Sedona Symphony\, Arizona Philharmonic\, and was a tenured member of Arizona Opera. Other orchestral engagements include Arizona Musicfest\, Castleton Festival Orchestra\, and as a regular substitute with The Phoenix Symphony\, Tucson Symphony Orchestra\, and the Des Moines Symphony. As a chamber musician\, he has collaborated with members of The Cleveland Orchestra\, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra\, the St. Lawrence String Quartet\, the Shanghai Quartet\, the Brentano String Quartet\, and The Ying Quartet. Other highlights include performing the Elgar Cello Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations as the winner of ISU’s Concert of Soloists competition. \nDr. Park served as the cello faculty at Glendale Community College. He received his Doctorate in Cello Performance at Arizona State University\, where he served as teaching assistant to Tom Landschoot and wrote his dissertation on the efficacy of Skype lessons through quantitative analysis. He received his MM in Cello Performance at Arizona State University and was the recipient of the Atsumi Cello Scholarship. He received his BM magna cum laude at Iowa State University\, where he studied with George Work of the Ames Piano Quartet. Previous teachers include Dr. Julie McGinnis Sturm\, Hans Jørgen Jensen\, Stephen Geber\, and Yehuda Hanani. \nThis concert will have a livestream.

DESCRIPTION:A concert featuring guest artists Miguel Chuaqui and Laura Grantier to premiere Chuaqui’s new composition for clarinet and interactive electronics will take place Thursday\, Oct. 9 in Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.  The concert also features ISU professor George Work performing Chuaqui’s “Trance” for cello and computer.  Rounding out the program are two works for spatial motion of musical sound (come hear Martha Ellen Tye Recital Hall’s surround sound system really get a workout) and a special video composition “Petals” by João Pedro Oliveira that combines electronic music with computer-generated visual animations (see the still image from the video on this page).  Attend this concert to have a “State of the Art Now” musical experience. \nArrive early to learn more: Guest artists Miguel Chuaqui and Laura Grantier will join Lipa Festival director Christopher Hopkins in a pre-concert talk about their collaboration on Chuaqui’s new composition “Evocaciones” at 7 p.m.. \nThis concert will have a livestream.

DESCRIPTION:Sat.\, May 10\, 2025 | 7:30 p.m.\nMartha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall (300 Union Dr.)\, ISU \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKevin Zhu’s astonishing technical mastery and artistic sensibility have earned him major honors and accolades worldwide. The youngest recipient of the Yehudi Menuhin Competition in 2012\, he went on to win the Paganini International Competition six years later\, at 17. Recent concert tours have taken him to major stages of Berlin and  Beijing\, New York and Washington\, DC. His mentors at the Juilliard School were Itzhak Perlman and Li Lin. \nPraised for his “awesome technical command and maturity” (The Strad) and “absolute virtuosity\, almost blinding in its incredible purity” (L’ape musicale)\, Kevin has performed on the world’s largest stages. \nPianist Maxim Lando has been hailed by the New York Times for his “brilliance and infectious exuberance. ”  In 2017\, at age 15\, he performed on Carnegie Hall’s opening night gala with Chick Corea\, Lang Lang and the Philadelphia Orchestra.  And upon winning First Prize at the Young Concert Artists International Auditions the next year\, his recital debuts at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall and the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater included Liszt’s complete Transcendental Etudes.  He was named a  Gilmore Young Artist\, as well as Musical America‘s New Artist of the Month and received the 2022 Vendome Grand Prize as well as First Prize in the Franz Liszt International Competition.
